I began reading Tolkien to my oldest daughter the night she got her braces on, simply to help take her mind off the pain. Our evening explorations of Middle Earth eventually brought us to Chapter 6 of Return of the King; the Pelannor Fields. In this chapter Rohan arrives to lend their aid to Gondor and do battle with the armies of Mordor. Theoden fights valiantly but is ultimately felled by a terrifying Nazgul, the Witch-King of Angmar. Two of Theoden’s soldiers dare to contend with the Witch-King, young Dernhelm the brave and a courageous hobbit, Meriadoc Brandybuck. It was the unveiling of Dernhelm’s true identity that captured my daughter’s attention and inspired me to turn a portion of this chapter into a comic.
